What I claim

Copyright © 2026 Roger Pielke Jr. The claim covers the writing, the analysis, the design of the figures, the selection and arrangement of the underlying series, and the code that builds these sites.

What I do not claim

The observations themselves belong to whoever produced them. Most come from US federal agencies — NOAA, NASA, USGS, the National Weather Service — and carry no copyright at all under 17 U.S.C. §105. ERA5 and the other Copernicus products arrive under the Copernicus licence, which travels with the data and governs your use of it rather than anything on this page. Quoted material from third parties stays with its owner. Each site names its sources one by one on its Methodology page.

Writing and figures

Licensed under CC BY-ND 4.0. Copy and redistribute the text and the figures in any medium, commercial use included, so long as you credit me and link back. What the licence withholds is the altered copy: recutting a chart, changing its axes or its time span, or editing a sentence and putting my name on the result.

Quotation is a different matter and needs no licence at all. Excerpting a passage, or reproducing a figure inside commentary of your own, remains ordinary fair use, and a citation covers it.

Data files

Licensed under CC BY 4.0. That covers every derived series these sites publish — the JSON and CSV behind the charts, and the spreadsheets offered for download. Use it, adapt it, build on it, sell what you build, and cite the source. No no-derivatives restriction applies here, because publishing the numbers serves no purpose unless other people can redo the arithmetic.

Code

Every one of these sites builds from a public repository, and each repository carries a LICENSE file. The code goes out under the MIT licence, so that anyone who wants to check a result can run the pipeline that produced it.

How to cite

For a figure or a finding, name the site, the page and the date you read it. For example:

These sites update on a schedule, so an access date matters more here than it would for a fixed publication.

Text and data mining, and AI training

I reserve the rights to text and data mining, within the meaning of Article 4(3) of EU Directive 2019/790 and the equivalent provisions elsewhere. Training a machine-learning model on this material, or folding it into a corpus assembled for that purpose, needs written permission first.

Crawling for search indexing, for citation and for link discovery stays welcome, and robots.txt on every one of these sites says so. The reservation above appears in machine-readable form at /.well-known/tdmrep.json, following the W3C Text and Data Mining Reservation Protocol.

Name and logo

“The Honest Broker” and the logo sit outside the licences above. No Creative Commons licence grants trademark rights, and reuse under one implies no endorsement from me.

Permission, and corrections

Anything the licences leave out — a full republication, a translation, an adapted figure, a mining or training request — comes down to an email: roger.pielke@aei.org. Corrections go to the same address. I would much rather hear about an error than not.
